    Builders Employ Software

For some builders, a good way to grasp the advantages of technology is to look to other builders as examples. These two builders noticed snags in their processes, one with tool tracking and one with homebuilding operations, and decided to turn to technology as the solution.

SelectBuild Construction, www.selectbuild.com, San Francisco, Calif., a division of BMHC (Building Materials Holding Corp.), www.bmhc.com, San Francisco, Calif., is no stranger to technology.

It won a Constructech Vision Award for its use of goLabor from Equential, www.equential.com, Jacksonville, Fla., and its use of accounting solution, Timberline, from Sage Software, www.sagetimberlineoffice.com, Beaverton, Ore.

When its Northern California and Las Vegas locations brought up concerns regarding tracking tools in tools warehouses, the company knew it should turn to technology as the solution.

“The system had to be easy to use and integrate with our current accounting system,” says Kari Lopez, director of business systems, BMHC. “When we took a look at what we wanted the program to accomplish for us, we realized that

ToolWatch (www.toolwatch.com, Englewood, Colo.) was the best option.”
ToolWatch gave SelectBuild the opportunity to note low levels of consumable items. In just the Las Vegas and Northern California locations, SelectBuild says it will save $400,000 a year as well as 5,600 hours.

“ToolWatch has let us spend less time monitoring inventory levels and consolidate purchase orders,” says Lopez. “That means we’re not only saving time on all those activities, we’ve (also) been able to reassign employees new responsibilities and get more tasks done every day.”

Taylor Morrison, www.taylormorrison.com, Bradenton, Fla., a single-family, multi-family, and condominium builder, operates in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, and Texas as well as Ontario. Taylor Morrison recently selected Constellation’s, www.constellationhb.com, Markham, Ont., NEWSTAR Enterprise homebuilding system to manage projects.

“We felt our competency to build homes, together with Constellation’s competency to build software for homebuilders, formed a mutually beneficial relationship with both parties doing what they do best,” says Bob Witte, CIO (chief information officer), Taylor Morrison.

Taylor Morrison chose to connect its NEWSTAR Enterprise with NEWSTAR Sales and Constellation BuildPro. With NEWSTAR Sales, builders can use software to manage the sales process, which means Taylor Morrison can focus on selling homes. With BuildPro, Taylor Morrison can do field schedule reporting on an Internet-based solution.
